Revel Marathon–Big Bear Race Results and Recap

Hello! I ran the Revel Big Bear Marathon this weekend! I did a bunch of Instagram Stories on it – make sure you’re following @RunEatRepeat on IG for the updates!!

I hadn’t run a full marathon in a long time so I was stressed and unsure of how it would go. I wanted to have fun. I wanted to run well and get in a strong long run / marathon / mental exercise situation. And I think I did okay with all of those. I still have a very far way to go if I want to run faster, but I feel a lot more confident now! I’m confident I’m capable of running better and accomplishing hard goals. Now I just need to get specific with what those goals are and a plan to go after them. But today… I’m relaxing, eating and recapping my race…

Revel Marathon Big Bear Race Results – Top 10 Highlights

1. My 1 friend and only running buddy Skinny Runner aka @BarlesHambone came all the way from the north west tip of the USA to come run with me!!*

2. Steve biked all the way from Pasadena to Big Bear to watch me finish!!**

3. I saw Elise on the bus, Pam before the race and a lot of followers on the course and at the Finish!!Thank you for saying Hi!!!***

4. Team RunEatRepeat rocked the race!! The half marathon and marathon runners ran fast and strong! (If you want a discount for Revel Hawaii – check out my Race Discounts page)****

5. I wanted to give up at mile 20… and I didn’t.

6. I made 2 bathroom stops during the race. And I wasn’t quick about it.
7. It wasn’t as cold as I thought it was going to be at the start. But we were prepared with throw away gear, ponchos, beanies and hot hands.

8. I wanted to give up at mile 22… and I did – – kinda… but kept moving forward.*****

I felt exhausted and wanted it to be over. I told SR I was done and didn’t care if I did a sub-4 hour marathon after all. I just wanted it to be over. She kept pushing me and encouraging me to suck it up and keep going. At the time I was made at her. We argued like an old married couple. But I kept my voice down (well, it was quiet for me at least). She kept on me trying different ways to motivate me…

SR: ‘don’t you think everyone wants it to be over? that’s not just you…’
Me: (silent anger)
//
SR: ‘do it for the insta’
Me: NO. I don’t care, you know I don’t care about that.
//
SR: ‘we’re almost done…’
Me: I was done miles ago! I don’t want to do this.
//
SR: ‘make it a time you can be proud of’
Me: I’m proud of just doing this! I don’t care about my time.
//
SR: ‘c’mon! we can do this!!…’
(another runner hears her try to motivate me and chimes in… )
Me: (gives SR a look because I’m not happy that now strangers are bugging me when I clearly am not interested in being motivated and would like to call an uber or an ambulance)
SR: ‘we have 20 more minutes. I think you can be uncomfortable for 20 more minutes…’
Me: (thinking bad words) puts in my headphones and starts to run

9. I FINISHED!!
Finish time: 3:50:46! I just wanted a sub-4 hour. And I’m happy with this extra because I really never got in the zone. I felt kinda tired and crappy the whole time. I’m not sure if that’s because of the elevation, my fitness level, me still fighting off being sick or a combination of all of those. But the point is – I did it. I’m back. I can still run 26.2 miles. I’m not as out of marathon shape as I thought.

10. It was gorgeous!! It’s a great course! The views were amazing!

Revel Marathon Big Bear Race Results podcast blog results 4

We were so high that it looked like we were above the clouds at some points. And the sunrise views on the mountains – it was so so gorgeous!

We ran on a 2 lane road from Big Bear to Redlands – it’s not somewhere runners can run safely. So it was very special and I’m very grateful that we got to run here and see the mountains in a way most don’t get to enjoy! I really loved it!

Revel Marathon Big Bear Results Team Run Eat Repeat blog 5 (600x800)

It was a great race and I really miss running with SR so it was extra awesome. And now that I think about it… I don’t know if I would have done it if she didn’t come out to run the full! So again, she is nice and I hope she decides living off the grid in Gnome, AK is not that fun and moves back to run with me all the time.

Next post – I’ll talk about food! We ate a bunch of good stuff!! It probably wasn’t the best fuel but it was good!

Oh – and make sure to follow me on Pinterest to find more race recaps & reviews, recipes, workouts and more!

I never talk about Pinterest and forget to mention it until someone contacts me from a Pin they saw and I think I should remind you to follow me there… so, um… that’s what I’m doing!

Notes from my list:

*SR doesn’t live in Alaska, she lives in Washington but I think it’s basically the same thing. I don’t know map-ology.

**Steve was there because he’s a running coach and several of this Soul Runners team members ran the race.

***I forgot why I put an asterisk on this number.

****Yes, I’m working on getting a team discount code for the other Revel Races. I do have one for Hawaii – check on the Race Discounts page.

*****Now that the race is over… I’m super grateful SR pushed me. At the time I was Done. I wasn’t going to quit but I just wanted to walk the last few miles. I felt like crap. But obviously I was able to push through it because I did. If she wasn’t there encouraging me to keep running – I would have walked a lot more! So, yeah she was right that I had more to give.

Coming up: What I ate before the race… What I ate during the race… What I ate after the race! <- Let me know if you have any specific questions on this!

Should You Take Collagen–Benefits of Collagen for Fitness Podcast

Today I’m talking with Registered Dietitian  Lindsey Janeiro all about collagen. Collagen powder is the hottest supplement on social media with people putting it in everything from coffee to protein snack bites. So I’m talking to an expert to ask everything you want to know – Should you take it? What are the benefits? Will it make me run faster? Lose weight? Look pretty? Get me friends? Fill the hole in my heart???

If you’re new here … My name is Monica and I created Run Eat Repeat over 9 years ago to document training for my first full marathon and struggles with my weight. I ran that marathon, eventually lost the weight and the site turned into a great community online and now this podcast! Thank you for listening!

Now ‘let’s warm up!

RER Podcast logo

Warm Up:

This weekend I’m running the Revel Big Bear Marathon.

Thoughts before the race… impending doom.

I don’t feel ready at all. And that stresses me out.

I used to run a half marathon and full marathon practically every month. I fell off the wagon because I was sad, not motivated and gave up on my goal.

In doing the notes for the warm up and identifying that I’m not ready to run a full marathon – in part because I didn’t train long or hard enough… but also because I got hurt in a non-physical way that really messed me up… makes me feel a little better about it.

Yes – I could have gotten it together and ran the hell out of other marathons in the last year. Yes – I could have trained harder. Yes – I could have gotten in the best shape of my life!!

But I didn’t… so I start here. This is where I am and I’m moving forward from this spot. Focusing on where I was – faster, fitter, thinner… doesn’t help where I am.

I’m not being straight up reckless with my health – turns out I did run 2  -18 mile long runs! – which is all I did for m first marathon (let’s not talk about how I hated myself after that race tho).

And the only way I will get back to running marathon distance is by running a marathon, getting my ass handed to me and getting back on track.

So this weekend my marathon goals are:

A. Run a sub-4 hour marathon

B. Finish the marathon strong – run smart, pay attention to fuel and how I feel to learn from it

C. Finish.

D. Not die.

And I’m running with my 1 friend!! So I’m really excited about that!!

Don’t forget – there are a lot of races coming up!!

Collagen Powder Nutrition for Runners

Lindsey Janeiro is a Registered Dietitian and founder of Nutrition to Fit. You can follow her on instagram @NutritionToFit or on her website  https://nutritiontofit.com – I’ll put links in the show notes to her contact info and articles on collagen  RunEatRepeat.com
https://instagram.com/nutritiontofit

lindsey@nutritiontofit.com

I’m asking her all the questions on collagen! Everything you (and I ) want to know about it.

Should you take it? Why?

What are the benefits of taking collagen peptides?

What is collagen?

What’s the difference between collagen powder versus collagen pill supplements?

What are the benefits?

Are there any side-effects?

Will it help me run faster? Look younger? Lose weight? Be happier? Less lonely? Keep me warm at night?///

What is collagen powder made from?

Can it help restore skin collagen?

Are there foods that can provide the same benefits?

Are there foods that can increase collagen or help prevent collagen loss?

What should we look for in a collagen supplement? What should we avoid? (nutrition label info / sources / serving size / etc)

Here’s some info from Lindsey Janiero RD via Nutrition to Fit:

Collagen 101 – what is it?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body, found in skin, muscles, tendons, bones, ligaments, and even teeth, blood vessels, and corneas. Collagen has many roles, from helping give your skin elasticity to providing strength in your bones.

What’s in collagen made from?

Hydrolyzed collagen peptides are made by processing animal cartilage, hides, and bones. This can be from cows, pork, chicken, or other animals and may include one source (i.e. bovine hides) or multiple (hides and cartilage). They can also be sourced from marine sources, like shellfish, fish skins, or cartilage from fish or sharks.

What are the benefits?

Collagen enthusiasts claim collagen benefits/ collagen peptide benefits for anything from improved hair, nails, and skin, to joint health, digestive health, and other various medical conditions.

Dietary supplements are not regulated by the FDA in the same way our conventional food supply is regulated, which means supplement companies are expected to evaluate the safety and labeling of their products before marketing to ensure they meet all requirements of DSHEA and FDA regulations (6).

Are there specific benefits for athletes?

Research is suggesting that collagen may reduce and prevent joint pain and bone density loss (9). One 24-week study looked at hydrolyzed collagen as a dietary supplement to help athletes with activity-related joint pain, noting possible benefits of collagen supporting joint health, reducing joint pain that could inhibit athletic performance, and possibly reduce the risk of joint deterioration in certain individuals (10). Happy World Mental Health Day from your local Monican

On the podcast the last week I talked a bit about how I first started therapy. I’m oddly comfortable sharing because in college my bf’s mom talked about it no differently than she talked about anything else. I was taught it was okay so I didn’t hesitate when I thought I needed help.

World Mental Health Day Blog

You don’t need to have a traumatic experience to justify getting help.
▫️
You can have a normal childhood… and struggle with having healthy relationships.
▫️
You can have parents that loved you… but not love yourself.
▫️
Maybe you’ve never been in an abusive relationship… but tolerate shitty behavior from the people you date.
▫️
You don’t have to be super underweight or overweight… to have an eating disorder.

▫️

You can be religious… and cheat on someone you love.
▫️
You can be kind to your friends and family… but say cruel things to yourself.
▫️

There are no prizes for dealing with your problems alone.
And hurt people hurt people… So if nothing else helping yourself will help the people you love.

If you need a friend, a therapist, God, medication, a puppy… I am encouraging you to make it happen.

And I know that certain resources are not available to everyone. I was very lucky to be able to go to therapy because I had health insurance in college and just had to make the co-pay. Many places have low cost resources – Google your city & low cost mental health services to see your options.

Pumpkin Pie Protein Shake Recipe

Healthy Pumpkin Pie Protein Smoothie Recipe with canned pumpkin, yogurt and pumpkin pie spice. It’s a super easy and delicious post-run snack!

Pumpkin Pie Smoothie protein shake recipe (534x800)

This smoothie is a great snack or post-run meal because it’s packed with a good ratio of carbs and protein. You should aim to refuel with something that’s about a 4 to 1 or 3 to 1 carbohydrate to protein ratio. This includes things like chocolate milk, yogurt, a turkey sandwich, Clif Bars…

Or this smoothie!

Pumpkin is really good for you!

But um, why?

It’s low in calories and packed with vitamins and fiber.

Pumpkin Protein Shake Nutrition information recipe (800x800)

I used vanilla greek yogurt for the protein in this recipe but you can use regular vanilla yogurt or another flavor that may compliment the pumpkin pie spice flavor. I love using yogurt in smoothies and other recipes because it’s has protein and probiotics. And beyond the nutrition benefits – it adds a creaminess to smoothies that makes it taste like dessert!

This is a super easy recipe you can enjoy as a light post-run meal or snack. Let me know if you try it!

Pumpkin Pie Protein Shake Recipe

Ingredients:

1/3 cup pumpkin (canned, plain)
1 6 oz vanilla yogurt
1/2 cup almond milk
1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1 packet sugar or stevia
ice (4-5 big cubes)

Directions: Blend all ingredients thoroughly.  Top with your favorite granola or nuts.

(Add ice to thicken if necessary, use less ice if you want it thinner and easier to drink.)

Enjoy!

I topped mine with nuts and extra nutmeg. There’s just something about nutmeg that makes it smell, feel, taste… like pumpkin pie!

Crisis Text Line– Chief Medical Officer Covers the free service, mental health, therapy and more – Podcast 97

Today I’m talking with the Chief Medical Officer for The Crisis Text Line. It’s a free confidential text message service for people in crisis. Anyone can text 741 741 in the US or in Canada text 686868 – and services are available 24 hours a day.

There’s been a lot of talk about suicide on social media and in the news with the recent passing of Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade. Sadly suicide is on the rise in the US – Suicide is the 2nd highest cause of death for people age 15 to 24. It’s tragic and if nothing else it gives us an opportunity to talk about it. So… that’s what we’re doing today. I want to share this resource in case you or anyone you know needs it.

Go to www.RunEatRepeat.com for all the show notes …

And because I mention it during the interview I’m going to start off by sharing how I first went to therapy and why I’m so comfortable talking about this stuff.

Everything is going to be okay. Until then here are some puppies. (800x800) (800x800)

If you’re new here…

My name is Monica and I started Run Eat Repeat over 9 years ago to talk about training for my 1st marathon and weight loss struggles. I fell in love with running and with sharing my story so the site grew into an amazing community and now this show!   Check out Run Eat Repeat.com for training tips, recipes and random life updates! Welcome welcome!!

crisis text line phone number

Warm up:

I talk about going to therapy a lot and I joke about it a lot too. I estimate I’m joking 86% of the time.

But I want to talk about something serious today with covering the topic of self harm, mental health and suicide while trying to make it feel like a normal conversation, ya know? I talk about mental health a lot. I think it’s okay to not feel okay. I think it’s okay to go to therapy. I think it’s okay to be open about mental illness – just like it should be about an illness like diabetes or hypothyroidism or a broken bone.

I mention on the call that I went to therapy in college and I wanted to share my first experience – why I went to therapy originally and how I got started going and finding a therapist.

And it occurred to me that while I think it’s cool to talk about therapy and mental health – not everyone feels like that. Maybe someone is embarrassed about it? Or maybe you think therapy isn’t necessary??

So I was curious – why do I think it’s okay to go to therapy?

And I realized because no one ever told me it was weird. And because it was such a normal part of life and conversations with my first long term boyfriend in college. I just realized this! I used to go to Sunday dinners with his family and sometimes they’d talk about therapy like it was another hobby. It wasn’t any different than any other dinner conversation.

So I thought – oh, I should check that out… and I did.

I was in college and still on my mom’s health insurance. I just looked on the back of my insurance card and called the number to see how I could find a therapist.

I went to someone they referred me to, paid my co-pay and had one or two sessions with a female therapist a few cities over.

I didn’t really dig it so I looked for another one and eventually found someone near my part-time job. And I liked her!! And I kept going… (insert long ramblings probably not super helpful or relevant here about therapy)

Moral of the story – I thought all of this was very no big.

So I feel comfortable talking about mental health the same way we might talk about missing a sale on running shoes… or something more serious?

I want everyone to be more comfortable talking about this – which is why I wanted to share the number to the text line and other resources.

And also wanted to remind you that sometimes I joke about serious things – not because I don’t take them seriously, but because to me it’s not very different from the fact that I’m into running or cooking or failing at doing perfect eyeliner even after 288 tries.

I want to encourage you to be open minded – to everything and everyone.

Be curious.

Be kind (to yourself as well).

Speak truth in love.

Extend everyone grace that they might be having a hard time, might not know how to express themselves, might not understand how you feel.

Ask for help if you need it.

Offer help if you think someone else does.

Don’t take it personally if someone doesn’t want to talk to you. But offer to be there if they do.

And finally…

tell everyone that you love them (and tell them to listen to the Run Eat Repeat podcast).

Thank you! You’re the best!

Now let’s get to the main event!

Main Event – Crisis Text Line

Crisis Text Line with Dr. Shairi Turner podcast interview (800x800)

Today I’m talking to the Chief Medical Officer with the Crisis Text Line Dr. Shairi Turner.

Dr. Turner has a Master of Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health,  a Medical Doctorate from Case Western Reserve School of Medicine and a Bachelor of Science from Stanford. She trained at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Children’s Hospital of Boston. Before taking her current position she was Chief Medical Director of the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice and former Deputy Secretary for Health at the Florida Department of Health.

Her resume and advocacy are beyond impressive. And I’m very happy to have her on the show today.

We discuss…

What is the Crisis Text Line?

Why is suicide on the rise in the United States?

Suicide is the 2nd highest cause of death for people age 15 to 24… Why is that?

How social media can impact mental health?

How do we keep an eye out if we think someone is at risk for hurting themselves?

What do we say or do if we think someone we know may be at risk for hurting themselves?

Always Ask – when someone contacts the Crisis Text Line they always identify and ask if someone is thinking about hurting themselves.

Knife Skills Class at Sur La Table and the BEST Run and Food of September!

Hello! How’s it going? How was your month … last month aka September aka a few days ago?  Did you make October goals?

I did!

(Read as: I’m going to make them right now in an effort to get it together.)

But before we get into the best run, eat and repeat from September & new month goals… Let’s talk about chopping!

20180919_203913-01 (800x600)

I took the Knife Skills 101 class at Sur La Table a few nights ago!! I don’t remember how I originally heard about it but I knew I desperately needed this class! And I finally have a friend and convinced them to take the class with me!! Boom.

20180919_202723-01 (600x800)

So if you’re keeping track here is the current score on life stuff:

1. make friend – done

2. learn something – done and done

3. maintain friendship – tbd

4. put new skill to use – tbd

Most Sur La Table stores have cooking and kitchen skills classes. There are 2 locations near me in south Orange County and I took the class at the South Coast Plaza location.

South Coast Plaza is a very fancy mall in Orange County with super high end stores that I don’t actually go into because of fear I’ll accidentally wipe my germs on a pair of socks that costs $5000 and then be asked to pay for it or be arrested for being poor or something.

Anyway.

I managed to try and act cool long enough to enjoy a glass of wine at one of the restaurants with before class. And they gave us fancy bread which is important and notable.

20180919_182859-01 (600x800)

20180919_182910-01 (600x800)

It’s a good idea to drink before learning how to use super sharp knives, right?

sur la table chopping class

Sur La Table Knife Skills 101

This 2 hour class is $65 per person. It’s a fairly small group – there were 8 people in the class and 1 instructor. And it’s hands-on so we chopped different vegetables using different techniques as we went along. Then, we put it together at the end with a Green Goddess Dip (the instructor made in front of us) and a Roasted Red Pepper Soup.

Everything I know about cooking and food prep I’ve learned from the Food Network. Also – everything I know about eating I learned from Guy Fieri.

guy fieri eating

food network eat

So I really needed this class!

sur la table knife skills cooking class

sur la table knife skills cooking class 101 a

Highlights of the Knife Skills 101 Class:

  • Learning how to sharpen your knife
  • The onion chopping hack that keeps it together
  • Rubbing your hands on stainless steel gets the garlic smell out
  • Me laughing at myself and almost drooling on the veggies I was chopping which we were using for the dip platter
  • That you’re supposed to always hold a knife down and at your side when walking through the kitchen
  • Oh, and say ‘knife!’ when you’re walking behind or past someone so they don’t bump into you
  • Don’t say “KNIFE!!!” when you’re home alone while making a stabbing motion as this encourages an eventual spiral into insanity
  • Don’t arrive dressed like a ninja thinking the class is about fast sword skills

sword fight class

sur la table knife skills cooking class south coast

I liked the class and would definitely want to take another class. I want to go to cooking school now!

Or maybe buy Julia Child’s Master the Art of French Cooking cookbook and do all the recipes and blog about them.

Awww. Someone already did that?! Never mind.

amy adams cooking

The dip and soup were amazing. The soup was my favorite!! And the recipe is in the handout packet we got!

20180919_205322-01 (800x600)

20180919_203918-01 (800x600)

I loved it!

It was fun and I learned something and Gordon Ramsey didn’t say I was a crap sandwich or something.

(I don’t know if that actually happened on TV… him calling something that, but I feel like it did?)

Okay wait… I looked it up!

gordon ramsey sandwich

Anyway.

I definitely want to take another cooking class or go to culinary school or maybe enter an eating contest…

20180919_202725-01 (600x800)

Now let’s talk about the best running and eating from last month! If you want to take a cooking class or get more info check out your local Sur La Table.

This isn’t an ad or sponsored – I just know I’m going to get questions and want to share in case you also want to be fancy and cook-y or choppy. And I looked for a Groupon and coupon code for it and couldn’t find one – but I just saw there’s one for October! Select Classes are only $46 with code: CLASSES46 – See details

So I’m randomly charging my Garmin running watch right now and since it’s here I looked up my mileage for the month. I rarely do this so I’m excited about the timing!

September Running Stats:

Total miles run: 229

Days run: 24

Hours run: 34

Calories I burned: 24,147

Calories I ate: 2,988,248

monthly mileage running

I’m most excited to see I ran 24 days out of 30. I was concerned that I wasn’t taking enough rest days but I took 6 for the month. Boom.

Favorite RUN:

This was a hard call because – I didn’t realize I ran 18 miles on Sept 1st…!

I was talking to Janae ( Hungry Runner Girl ) the other day and talking about marathon training and how not ready I am for my next marathon. I said I hadn’t run more than 16 miles since last year. October Goals Planner–free printable monthly goal setting worksheet

Hello! It’s a new month and a new week! I love when Mondays time up with the 1st of the month – is that weird?

I have a round up of highlights from September coming up but I wanted to share this monthly goals sheet for October right away! If you’re chasing down a goal before the end of the year – make a plan!

Whether it’s to run faster, run a race, clean up your diet, get your life together or ‘insert your goal here’ – you are more likely to rock it if you write it down and make a plan.

We only have about 90 days left in the year so – do it today.

Monthly Goal Tips:

  • Prioritize your goals.
  • Choose 1 main goal to focus on this month.
  • Break it down into weekly goals.
  • Remind yourself of why you want to accomplish it.
  • Keep yourself accountable.

Pro Tip: Check in on my daily Run Report on @RunEatRepeat ‘s instagram  to stay accountable!
