How Runners Can Prevent and Defend Themselves Against Attacks – Podcast 94

Runner safety tips with self defense expert Gloria Marcott (800x800)

Today I’m talking with a self defense expert about how to stay safe while we’re running, jogging or walking outdoors. After a runner in Iowa was attacked recently I received a lot of messages asking for runner safety tips. So please listen to this episode and share it with your people – running buddies, mom, co-worker who takes walks during lunch. Let’s start a conversation about safety. You’re going to learn a lot today! And if you’re running right now I’ll have info in the show notes so you can pay attention to your surroundings first and review the tips later (while you stretch maybe).

Stay safe out there and have a great run!

Runner Safety Tips with Self Defense Expert

safety tips for fitness and health podcast

Today I’m talking to Gloria Marcott – she’s the owner and instructor for Soul Punch Self Defense.  She has over 20 years of experience teaching self defense classes and seminars – having trained over 10,000 women. She’s also an active law enforcement officer, mom and soul motivator. She has a ton of great tips on how to prevent an attack, what to be aware of and how to respond if you find yourself in an unsafe situation.

Recently this topic has been all over social media because Mollie Tibbetts – a runner in Iowa was killed while out on a run by herself. A lot of people were posting using the hashtag #MilesforMollie to bring awareness to her death and connect with others. It’s a way to show support and remind us to be mindful of our safety.

I already had this call scheduled before the tragedy and am extra grateful for this info now and I hope it helps us feel empowered and better educated on how to stay safe out there. I’m putting a post on Instagram today with a check in – how would you grade yourself on your safety practices? Why? Chime in and tag your friends!

Reach out to Gloria Marcott on social media or on her site and show some appreciation for her time on the show! And if you’re in the area check out one of her self defense training classes.

Homework:

I get lazy with best practices for safety after a while.  When a tragedy happens I’m good about it for a bit then it falls by the wayside. So I think we should all check in with our current safety habits.

I’m putting a post on Instagram today with a check in >>>

How would you GRADE YOURSELF on your safety practices 1 out of 5 ? Why? Chime in and tag your friends!

5 runner safety tips life saving reminders for runners, joggers or walkers podcast (800x800)

Tips to Prevent and Defend Yourself Against Attacks while running, cycling, walking outdoors:

1. Situational Awareness  – are you aware of who is around you? One ear phone in. Head on a swivel?

2. Know your boundaries  – do you know your physical boundaries? how would you respond if someone crossed them?

3. Pre-attack indicators… what do you look for when someone is going to attack you.  do you know pre-attack indicators?

4. Physical Skill. Know your physical skill – your violence of action has to be greater than the violence of action against you.  Do you have self defense training?

5. Self defense tool. Defense Alert Device – military grade pepper spray, impact tool, bright light and GPS technology to signal for help. Do you have a self defense tool?

Homework:

Check in with your CURRENT safety habits and share in the notes or on today’s Run Eat Repeat Instagram post

Go through each of the 5 tips and think about what you’re doing right and what you need to be more mindful of when it comes to running safe and smart.

If you have a question or topic you’d like me to cover – let me know!

Email RunEatRepeat@gmail.com or call the RER voicemail at 562 888 1644 – name and question. Try to keep it to under 90 seconds but get specific if you want.

Thanks! Stay safe out there and have a great run!

I’m very big on sharing tips and tools to keep you safe – I did a runner safety week a while back with a lot of tips and reminders. Sometimes it’s info we already know – but have gotten lazy about practicing. Check out the show notes for those posts!

Gorton’s Shrimp Bowls–New Complete Frozen Meals

Hello! I spotted the new Gorton’s Shrimp Bowls a few weeks ago at the store. I love finding new products! (Which is why I spend way too long at the grocery store and the people who work there think I’m a lil weird.) And today I’m sharing my thoughts in partnership with Gorton’s.

I’ve tried both of the new complete meal shrimp bowls and am here to report back on my findings! I tried noodle bowl right away. It was super easy to throw together a quick lunch while I made my ‘ to do’ list and scrolled through the ‘gram – but it seems so much fancier than my usual thrown together lunches.

Gortons Shrimp Bowl

I always keep a few frozen meals in the freezer for quick lunches on busy days. And these bowls are a nice change to my usual go-tos.

They’re a new product so if you don’t see them at your store ask if they’re available or displayed somewhere for new products.

The Gorton’s Shrimp Bowl varieties available now:

Soba Noodles Shrimp Bowl

Black Garlic Wine Risotto Shrimp Bowl

Gortons Shrimp Bowl frozen food

I tried the Soba Noodles Shrimp Bowl first because I love all types of Asian style noodle dishes and this didn’t disappoint. I liked all of it – the sauce, noodles and edamame.

Next I tried the black garlic and wine risotto… I really liked this one too!

I’m obsessed with mushrooms and this bowl had a ton of mushrooms in a super creamy sauce. It was a good mix of shrimp, mushrooms and risotto (something else I consider super fancy) in one complete meal bowl.

Gortons Shrimp Bowls Soba Noodles

They’re a good option for a quick lunch or dinner – I think it takes me the same amount of time to make a smoothie!

Gorton's Shrimp Bowls reviwe

You can find these new Gorton’s Shrimp Bowls in the frozen section at your local grocery store. My local Ralph’s has them.

Tip: They were near the frozen seafood – not by the frozen meals at my store.

Extra Tip: They were almost sold out! I took the last ones Smile

And check out information on these bowls and their other products on the Gorton’s website.

Question: What did you have for lunch?

Me: The Risotto Shrimp Bowl! Love those mushrooms!!

This post is sponsored by Gorton’s Seafood. All opinions are my own.

My mom came over the night before and stayed at my place because she was running the 5K. So race morning was more fun than usual having someone to go with.
I did the usual pre-race iced coffee and brought along some cereal in a baggie.
I live pretty close to the race course starting line so I didn’t have to wake up too early. It was easy to get up get ready and get to the starting line.

Lexus lace-up Reese’s are awesome for a ton of reasons. They take post race perks to another level …

Half marathon at this location is new. Last year there was a 10K and a marathon relay. So this race course was new to me even though I run in this area a lot I hadn’t run this course before.

I love running in Irvine. It’s not super beautiful like running at the beach but there’s too many parks and walking paths that it gives you a lot of options. And Irvine was recently named the number 2 best place in the U.S. to raise a family!

Lexus Lace Up Half Marathon irvine results pictures (600x800)

Anyway… the Half Marathon course was a mix of running through neighborhoods and on one of the bike / pedestrian trails. It’s not an actual dirt trail – it’s a road race, but this path is called a trail.

I would say it is in the middle and terms of challenging… It’s not hilly but there are some rolling hills – especially when you are running on the path since it goes under the main streets a few times.
The weather was pretty mild but humid. The marine layer stayed around for most of the race so it wasn’t super bright and didn’t heat up until after I was done.

I haven’t run a race in a while so I wasn’t sure what to expect for myself. I just tried to run strong and get in a good tempo workout. I slowed down around mile 5 to switch up my music – something I wouldn’t normally do in a race but I really liked but random mix my playlist played for the first part of the race and just wanted to hear it again.

Now for the wardrobe malfunction:
I don’t know when it happened but in the last few miles of the race I felt something weird in my left shoe. It wasn’t painful so I just kept going and didn’t think about it. Then, it was becoming to feel more and more weird- like I had something in my shoe? I realized it was the insole lining that bunched up underneath my arch. It was just was kind of annoying at first but slowly got worse as it bunched up more.

At this point I was probably around mile 10 and I wasn’t going to stop take off my shoe and readjust it. Eventually it bunched up until the entire forefoot was jammed underneath my arch. I was wearing the my Brooks Hyperions which are a very lightweight running shoe. Since there’s not thick sole I felt like I was ripping a hole in the bottom of them and I could feel the street underneath my foot! With every step I imagined the insole wearing away until I’d be barefoot!

But the show much go on… or the race must go on?

Point is – it didn’t hurt and I knew it would be a big production to stop, take it off, figure out the problem, fix it – or potentially realize I couldn’t fix it, try to get the shoe back on and start running again. Nah. I just wanted to keep going.

I wasn’t in pain but having the insole jammed under my arch changed my running gait a bit. (If I had more miles to go I probably would have stopped and fixed it because I’d be a little afraid I was running with form that could cause an injury.)  As soon as I cross the finish line I walked out of the way to the side of the crowd and looked at the bottom of my shoe and took it off thinking that I would see a hole!!

But there wasn’t one. Womp womp.

I just felt the ground so much because the shoes are light. When I took it off I saw that the insole was bunched up in the middle of the shoe. This is never happened to me before with any shoes. I think it was the combination of them being newer shoes, the weather being so humid  = and me sweating so much into my sock, old-ish socks and the universe wanting me to have a funny story to tell?

Lexus Lace Up Half Marathon irvine results 5 (600x800)

Moral of the story: I don’t know why that happened. And I didn’t make a hole in my shoe or sock.

It was just a very random malfunction and I’m wondering if it had to do with the socks I was worrying or the fact that it was so humid and the sweat dripping down made my socks wet?
Mostly I just think it’s kind of funny and random given I run over 50 half marathons and this hasn’t happened before.

my half marathon time: 1:47:36 – avg pace 8:14

After the race I got to say hi to some of my local runner friends! A lot of people told me Hi during the race too!!

5 questions to ask yourself when you want to quit or skip a workout

Today I’m sharing 5 questions to ask yourself when you want to quit or skip a workout. We’re going to figure out if you’re helping or hurting yourself. And this week’s show is life or death – as in last week we talked about life (making babies) and this week I have really bad news. But I have some resources to help in case you are going through a loss.

New here? I’m Monica creator of RunEatRepeat.com at site I started to document my first marathon training and journey to lose weight. I ran a marathon, lost weight and much to my surprise the site grew a huge following and I fell in love with all things running, nutrition and health related.

Heartbreak Ted Talk – How to Fix a Broken Heart with Guy Winch

5 Reasons We Should Take The Loss of a Pet Seriously by Guy Winch

How to Fix a Broken Heart – book by Guy Winch

“Imagine if we treated broken hearts with the same respect and concern we have for broken arms? Psychologist Guy Winch urges us to rethink the way we deal with emotional pain, offering warm, wise, and witty advice for the broken-hearted.
Real heartbreak is unmistakable. We think of nothing else. We feel nothing else. We care about nothing else. Yet while we wouldn’t expect someone to return to daily activities immediately after suffering a broken limb, heartbroken people are expected to function normally in their lives, despite the emotional pain they feel. Now psychologist Guy Winch imagines how different things would be if we paid more attention to this unique emotion—if only we can understand how heartbreak works, we can begin to fix it.
Through compelling research and new scientific studies, Winch reveals how and why heartbreak impacts our brain and our behavior in dramatic and unexpected ways, regardless of our age. Emotional pain lowers our ability to reason, to think creatively, to problem solve…

Main Event: How to Know When to Push Yourself in Running and When to Take a Break

5 Questions to Ask Yourself…

1. Is it my body or my mind that wants a break?

Head to toe scan your body.

Is it physical? A certain body part? Is it tired / sore or potentially an injury?

Is it more of a mental block?

2. Is this an exception or the rule in my current training cycle?

What do the last few weeks of training look like?

Am I consistently getting in my workouts?

– If you have been bailing on a lot of workouts you might need to reassess your training plan.

Is it too advanced for your current fitness? Are you physically and mentally ready to complete 80% of the workouts?

3. How does this impact my goals?

How does pushing yourself to complete the workout align with my goals?

How does taking it easy impact your goals?

Will pushing yourself potentially hurt your body? Will it cause a ton of stress or burn out?

Can pushing through make you mentally tougher?

If your goal is to PR in the half marathon – you need to do the workout but you also don’t want to get injured or burnt out. So – will pushing yourself contribute to your training negatively?

4. Have I done this workout before? What was different then?

Am I able to do this workout physically? Am I able to do this workout mentally?

Have I been physically capable and or mentally capable of accomplishing this thing I’m trying to do.

Have I done this before… (quit on a long run, cut a run short, swapped speed work for an easy run)? If yes – how did that work out?

Was it for the best long term? Did I regret it? Did I have a really great workout the next time? Did it cause an injury?

5. Quit or Be kind?

Is this quitting or being kind to myself?

What would I want for my running buddy? What would I want for my 8 year old self?

keep showing up
