Egg Freezing and Getting Pregnant for Active Women with a Reproductive Endocrinologist Podcast 92

Today we’re talking about egg freezing, getting pregnant, putting off getting pregnant basically how to make a baby with a reproductive specialist. This is important info we should all know – whether you are done having kids, don’t want kids, don’t want to think about it right now… It’s getting more common to put off having babies but our bodies haven’t caught up with this timeline. We should all know how our bodies work for our own knowledge and also to be able to talk about it with the people in our lives. Let’s get comfortable talking about these things and it starts with getting educated.

New here? I’m Monica creator of RunEatRepeat.com at site I started to document my first marathon training and journey to lose weight. I ran a marathon, lost weight and much to my surprise the site grew a huge following and I fell in love with all things running, nutrition and health related.

You can follow along @RunEatRepeat on instagram

Warm Up:

I broke my tooth.

I saw my old dentist receptionist on HGTV – on the show Flea Market Flip. And I called her.

Main Event:

Before we get to the interview I want to share an update on my journey thinking about freezing my eggs, if I’ve decided to do it and what is factoring into my decision.

–> I made a video last year when I first started to research freezing my eggs. Note – most doctors call this fertility preservation.

Thinking About Egg Freezing video – my first thoughts on looking into it.

[Subscribe to my YouTube Channel here so you never miss a video!]

I’ve really gone back and forth with whether or not to do it for a few reasons…

– Cost

– Odds I’ll actually use them

– Relationship status

– Family history – my mom had my little brother when she was 45

– Timeline thoughts – part of me thinks if I’m going to have kids I should do it now since I have lil nieces and want them to grow up together

– Other options: deciding to do it alone via a sperm bank or adoption?

– Health

– and more

It’s a really hard decision because it’s so expensive and it’s just a back-up plan. But will I regret not doing it?

So I’m still thinking about it and don’t really have a clear plan one way or the other. I do know where I would do it if I was going to move forward so there’s a chance I might just go for it next week and there’s a chance I won’t do it. Stay tuned. Let me know if you have any questions or if you’ve done it and have something helpful to share.

Now let’s talk to Dr. Elizabeth A. Barbieri, she’s a board-certified specialist in reproductive endocrinology at Oregon Reproductive Medicine. Dr. Barbieri has extensive expertise in in vitro fertilization, infertility and egg freezing. And she really breaks down the medical jargon into a realistic way to think about these often emotional topics.

From Oregon Reproductive Medicine:

As more and more celebrities and athletes get pregnant later in life, the average woman is left thinking that she too can wait until her late 30s or 40s to start planning a family.  According to Dr. Elizabeth Barbieri of Oregon Reproductive Medicine, that’s not always the case. “Many celebrities and athletes are inadvertently setting unrealistic expectations for many women that it will be easy to get pregnant naturally in their 40s, when in fact a lot of these celebrities and athletes have struggled, and have had a little assistance along the way.”

Specifically, athletic women tend to put off family planning while they train in their 20’s and into their 30’s, which has its own set of challenges for fertility, including delayed or non existent menstrual cycles or disruption of body fat and cycles during intense training.
According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) a woman’s best reproductive years are in her 20s. Women in their 30s have a 20% chance of getting pregnant and by age 40, a woman’s chance of getting pregnant is less than 5%.

With many women delaying pregnancy until their 30s and 40s, fertility issues are becoming a growing topic of concern.

According to Dr. Barbieri, women need to think ahead and have a game plan, as there’s many things women need to consider in their 20s, 30s and 40s.

“Whether you’re a new college graduate that is just starting out on your career path, or if you’re in an established relationship in your 30s and trying to get pregnant without success, there’s a variety of options available to women on their journey to parenthood. Knowing more can help people take control of their fertility so they can start a family when the time is right for them.”

Dr. Elizabeth Barbieri of Oregon Reproductive Medicine shares insight on:

1. What are the chances of getting pregnant for a woman in her 20s, 30s and 40s.

2. When should you seek medical advice on trying to have a baby? (How long should you be trying to conceive before getting support)

3. Why would a woman freeze her eggs?

4. Does freezing eggs mean less eggs to work with when you want to have a baby?

5. What is the best age to freeze your eggs?

6. What to consider when thinking about freezing your eggs… age, timeline, relationship status, health, family history, etc.

7. What would prevent someone from freezing their eggs?

8. What are the benefits of fertility preservation?

9. Why don’t most women seem to use the eggs they froze?

10. What is the egg freezing process? Can I still workout if I’m freezing my eggs?

I’ll be talking to someone who tried to tackle this race and it’ll be fun if you’re familiar with it. And if you have a question for her – send it over!

The Barkley Marathons is an ultramarathon trail race held in Frozen Head State Park near Wartburg, Tennessee. Runners may elect a “fun run” of 60 miles (97 km) or the full course of 100 miles (160 km) (distances are approximate). The race is limited to a 60-hour period, and takes place in late March or early April of each year. (from Wikipedia)

5 Fast and Healthy Smoothie Recipes with Yogurt (no protein powder needed)

5 Smoothie Recipes with yogurt healthy breakfast for the week (534x800)

Trying to eat healthier? Need a quick breakfast? Want to switch up your usual post-workout snack? We can do all of those with these delicious and healthy smoothie recipes!

This week I’m sharing a different smoothie recipe each day. All of them are made with yogurt to help keep you full (it’s packed with protein) and fruit to sweeten the deal! Plus a few other healthy ingredients for a different delicious smoothie from Monday through Friday!

One 8 oz serving of vanilla yogurt has about 10g of protein. And adding whole grains (from the quick cook oats), fruit that’s packed with fiber and sweetens the smoothie plus healthy fats (from the nuts and chia seeds) – all contribute to a healthy and filling grab-and-go breakfast. I’ve found that when I have a good amount of protein and fat at breakfast or after a workout – I stay full longer than when I have a light snack or something that’s not balanced this way.

You can switch out the flavor of yogurt suggested above for your favorite. I always have a few containers in the fridge for quick snacks or smoothies like this. It’s just a super easy healthy snack.

Yogurt has:

  • Protein, which helps build and repair muscle tissue
  • Calcium and phosphorus, which help build and maintain strong bones and teeth
  • Riboflavin and pantothenic acid, which help your body use carbs, fats and protein for fuel
  • Vitamin B12, which helps with normal blood function and keeping the nervous system healthy
  • Zinc, which helps maintain a healthy immune system

Bonus – a new study suggests yogurt may help lower cardiovascular disease risk in adults with high blood pressure. – check out the study on the National Dairy Council site here

Run Eat Repeat Instagram Questions – A Podcast

Hello! Here are the latest questions I’ve received this week from my Instagram stories question box. You can ask me a question @RunEatRepeat on Instagram  or in the comments below! These questions hit all different bases from increasing speed and mileage to those Nuun electrolyte tablets. I recorded them for IGTV – so they’re available on video and audio on the Run Eat Repeat podcast.

1. Will you come to Oklahoma and help me be a better runner?

I’d love to run a race with you in OK!

2. ( This one got cut off. )

3. How do I increase my pace and increase my mileage at the same time?

A: It’s important to be smart about it to become a better faster runner but not get injured or burnt out. Find a training plan that will guide you to increase mileage and incorporate speed work. Remember the 10% rule – don’t increase your mileage more than 10% per week.

4. Where do I get those Nuun tablets you posted about yesterday?

A: Nuun is a great sports drink for running, workouts and in this case dehydration.

Nuun Tablets Variety Pack

I also love Spark for hydration and a great pick-me-up!

My favorites are the Spark Mango Strawberry and Spark Limeade

spark drink workout running energy and electrolyte

You can also get them in Spark Stick Packs to take them on the go. I always have some in my purse and gym bag.

spark stick packs coupon

5. Are you still moving? Do you speak Spanish? I do a little bit.

A: Yes it’s in the works!

6. School’s back in! Don’t forget to thank your custodian. (for your mom)

A: My mom’s a teacher and I helped her set up the classroom for this new school year.

7. What’s the secret to your amazing eyebrows?

A: I try not to pluck them myself and get them dyed or color them in. I’m a natural redhead and my brows are naturally lighter than my hair – so they’re a strawberry blonde color. So I define them with an eyebrow pencil and brow gel.

My favorite eyebrow pencil and brow gels:

Eyebrow pencil in Auburn by Anastasia of Beverly Hills

Maybelline eyebrow pencil in Auburn

Revlon ColorStay eyebrow pencil in Auburn

For Blonde Hair – this Taupe brow pencil is great

Eyebrow gel in Auburn by Anastasia of Beverly Hills

Eyebrow gel / mascara by Maybelline in Auburn

8. Would you consider doing / training for a triathlon?

A:  I like the idea of it and I’d love to be a better athlete but I think it’s a very expensive sport so probably not. I don’t want to buy a fancy bike and wetsuit and all that stuff. And I don’t know how or really want to learn how to change a bike tire.

9. Before the blog took off – what did you do for work?

A: I worked at Starbucks then for a recruiting company as a researcher and did internships at a cable news station and news station in Los Angeles.

10. If not a beer mile or wine mile…. margarita mile!!?!

A: Too soon!

11. How do you get back into running after your first marathon?

A: Make if fun again!

12. Which October marathon are you running? Ventura? It’s going to be my first full marathon!

A: Maybe Lace Up Ventura or there’s also the Long Beach Marathon and St. George in October!

Lexus Lace Up Race Discount Code

13. Have you done the Marine Corps Marathon?

A: I loved the Marine Corps Marathon!! Check out my recap and video here:

My First Hangover

Just me and my spirit animal talking a walk because I couldn’t run on Saturday. Yeah I had to skip my long run because I had a lil case of what they call Vodkitis …

weekend recap fitness update 4

Okay – since RER is sometimes a place to document major events in my life I have a new one to share! This weekend will go down in history as my first hangover!

Yeah, I don’t know how I dodged the hangover bullet up till this point – but I never had one before!!?! I knew it wouldn’t last forever. I knew I was playing with fate anytime I drank more than 2 cocktails. I don’t drink that often so it doesn’t even take that much for me to feel it. But by some red-headed Mexican magic I have not felt that crappy, nauseous, headachey feeling that is known as ‘regret’ or sometimes ‘a hangover’ until Saturday.

And it was NOT fun. I don’t want to do that again.

I think I’ve been able to drink (sometimes a tiny bit too much) and not get hungover because I always hydrate like it’s my job so I don’t get dehydrated (which is part of the reason for the headache). And I also eat like it’s my job which helps keep my stomach settled. Apparently I dropped the ball with that and didn’t eat or drink enough before my first ever bar crawl around Orange County.

Lesson learned.

Anyway.

hangover gif

Here are some random thoughts about the weekend…

– Went on an impromptu bar crawl on Friday…
It was my first one ever!! Yes – I’ve never been on a pub / bar tour / crawl before. This is mainly because I didn’t realize everyone else was doing stuff like this in college as I was too busy with my BF at the time who was past that part of his life. I thought I really missed out on a lot of fun but after this weekend maybe it’s for the best.

weekend recap fitness update 3

— it was also my first hangover ever on Saturday morning! Boo.

— I hugged Katie 4 times… I’m hoping that hits my quota for the year and she stops trying to hug me all the time.

Hangovers are nature's way of grounding you

— I felt horrible on Saturday. And for once it wasn’t horrible self esteem due to my choices but physically horrible due to vodka.

— Supposedly psychological wounds are worse than physical ones but it seems cheaper and faster to set a broken bone than to heal emotional trauma. ( I don’t know how this is related but it really feels like it is)

hangover did you die

— Somehow feeling nauseous isn’t painful but completely prevents any normal human function.

— Nuun is amazing for helping you on hot sweaty workouts for when your dehydrated from adult beverages. Seriously it felt magical to drink that. Thnx @nuunhydration

weekend recap fitness update 2

— I ordered a lot at Panera. But I usually order more.

weekend recap fitness update 1

— I was asking my friends for help on tips on how to bounce back from a hangover and one of them was grilling me so I tried to shut her down and then I felt bad…
and I think that text convo is a pretty accurate snapshot of what it’s like to be my friend. Except a lot louder in real life.

weekend recap fitness update

hangover cure

Moral of the story: Next time I go to Panera I’m getting a cookie and coffee cake.

Best Running Shorts – My Favorites and Tips on How to Podcast

Hello! Today I’m answering my #1 most asked running gear question – What running shorts are you wearing? Where can I get them? The best running shorts

In case you’re new to this lil ol’ website / blog / social media situation – I’m Monica Olivas, a red-headed Mexican on a mission to run a lot, eat a lot and talk about it a lot here and on RunEatRepeat.com. I started that site as a journal to remember my first marathon training journey – and never expected anyone to read it. Well, a few people did! And then a few more did!! I touched the Queen Mary!! I can’t believe I’ve never run the route all the way to the boat before!! … I ran with Steve this weekend – Coach Steve from the Sole Runners. He was on episode 72 – What to Eat During a Race or Long Run

I gave Coach Steve a really hard time about the ol’ bait and switch run. But it was the best and I feel really motivated to start training for a race.

– If you have questions for Coach Steve or want any specifics on his big BQ let me know and I’ll have him back on the show!

– I’m finally ready to move. It’s been in the back of my head movies for a year and I’m going to set a date to list my place so I have a deadline to do everything I need to do.

– I kinda want to rent a beach house for a week or long weekend somewhere around SoCal… but I’ve never used Air B&B before. Is that better than kayak? Other recommendations??

Now let’s talk running questions!!

My most frequently asked questions about running and eating are:

– What running shorts are those? (Sometimes it’s – What running shoes do you wear?)

– How many miles do you run a week? Do you do other cardio or cross-training?

– What’s your strength training routine? How do I incorporate strength training into marathon training?

– What’s your favorite race distance?

– When is your next race?

And today I’m addressing that first question on running shorts. Here are my favorites and some tips on how to find the best pair for you!

The Best Running Shorts – no chafing, no thigh rub, run faster, laugh harder

One of the most common questions I get on the blog, Facebook and Instagram is… some variation of

– What running shorts are those? Where do you get those running shorts? What shorts are you wearing to run?

The Best Running Shorts Tips:

– Look for a pair that are long enough to cover the area of your thighs that rub. I aim for shorts that have a 6”, 7” or 8” inseam.

– Look at how long the leg area is from the groin – not how long they are overall. Some shorts have a high waist or are cut to sit on your hips low or high. You want to know how long the leg part will be when wearing them.

– High quality compression fabric is important. Cheap or thin fabric is more likely to ride up / not stay in place. And the wrong fabric will not be flattering (read as: if you are self conscious about your butt and thighs jiggling – you want quality compression fabric). Look for a pair of shorts that is a combination of Spandex and Polyester or Nylon. The same fabric rules apply to capris and leggings.

– They’re supposed to be tight. If you’re used to running in loose running shorts with the built in chonies underwear– compression type shorts might feel revealing or weird. But if you try to get them loose they’ll move around and that’s often how chafing starts!

– Pay for it. Some of my favorite running shorts are more expensive than the workout shorts I can get at Target or wherever. But I’m looking for shorts that are long enough to not ride up, high quality compression fabric – and those things are not easy to find. So, I’d rather pay for more expensive running shorts and enjoy my run instead of pull at them the whole run or feel self conscious. And in my experience running shorts like the ones mentioned last a long time (and I’m running in them a lot!).

Awards:

1. Puffy key chain – right now I have a fluffy pink heart that I got at the Dollar Store. It’s so perfect for finding my keys quickly in the blackhole that is my purse. Also – the key ring part is a clip so I don’t have to squeeze my key back on the ring when I drive somewhere to go run. I suggest everyone that has to remove their key from the keyring often look into a key ring with a clip!

2. Cereal with granola in it. I love granola but it’s so calorie dense! So I really dig cereal that has granola clusters to help balance it out.

3. Kind strangers.
