Questions and Answers on Run Eat Repeat visors, podcasts and recovery days

Hello! Here are the answers to all your questions from the @RunEatRepeat Instagram stories this week. I cut it into 2 parts because I got a call mid-video (um, mideo?). Part 1 covers the RER visors and how long to recover for a half or full marathon. Part 2 is about tips for new bloggers and fun personal questions like “What do you like to do on Sundays?”.

If you have a question for me… Ask!

Thank you for watching! You’re my favorite!!

Question and Answers Part 1 video

Any updates on the visors?

Yes – RER visors are in the works! I asked on a recent Instagram post for your color choices and am trying to get that going. It will probably be 30 days until they’re available (per the company I’m working with).

(I asked for color requests on Instagram a few weeks ago. If you want to chime in with your vote comment or DM me but I’m not checking that post for new color suggestions.)

How long do you recover after a half marathon?

The usual rule for post-race recovery time is one easy day for every mile of the race. So for a half marathon you’d take 13 days easy / recovery type days.

Every body is different and YOU should do what is best for your body.

Ran my first marathon last weekend. How long do you take off after 26.2 miles?

Question and Answers Part 2 video

What are your tips for a new blogger just starting out?

Egg Freezing–How the Injections At Home Are Going

The next step in how the process of egg freezing works – this is all about the shots. I mentioned in my last video that I thought the shots I was going to have to give myself where going to be super easy – like an epi-pen. I thought they’d be automatic and I’d just click it into my stomach super quick and easy and be on my lil way.

Yeah… no.

It was a lot more complicated than that.

But it was do-able.

egg freeze how i'm doing the injections

I think the fact that I assumed it would be so easy but then realizing it was a real injection made it more difficult. My expectations were incorrect and that led me into this process a little more overwhelmed than if I knew from the start it would be a real shot with real measurements and real needles.

Note: No one straight up told me it was going to be an epipen style injection. I saw that some of the shots are available in a pre-measured and ready to go injection like an epi-pen in my research. And I always assume medicine and technology are moving fast and updating faster so if I see something online – tech or in this case medicine is already a step ahead. I don’t know why I think that… maybe wishful thinking? Well, at least I have an optimistic mindset – right?!

The point is – I had to give myself REAL shots with REAL needles. And I had to mix some of the injections with liquid and/or mix them together to get the right dosage. So I was combining multiple liquids and vials of medication and carefully filling up the shots for the prescribed dose. Then, cleaning off my stomach with a little alcohol wipe and giving myself the injection.

I’ll go into more detail on the step by step process of the injections soon. But for now I wanted to share a short video of me actually doing one of the injections for anyone that’s curious or wants a peek at what it’s like. I wish I would have had a video like this to watch before I started the injections and then I might have had more realistic expectations. Maybe.

How To Make A Better Bowl of Cereal– Healthy Breakfast Tips!

March is National Nutrition Month – which makes it a great time to check-in and make sure we’re balancing healthy choices and our favorite foods. I prefer to make small, realistic improvements to my diet (instead of dramatic changes that won’t last). And so, the first stop on my check-in is a food I eat almost every day – cereal.

Cereal is one of my favorites – it’s great for breakfast or a snack. For this post, I’m sharing some tips on how to make your bowl of cereal better for you with some healthy swaps.

how to make a healthier bowl of cereal

There are so many ways to enjoy cereal – it can be a nutritious start to your day or a sugary snack attack! And while it doesn’t require any cooking – a smart bowl of cereal does take some thought and planning. If you want to start your day with a balanced breakfast, consider everything you’re pouring into that bowl.

Choosing a good combination of whole grains and protein can help keep you full through lunch. And there are so many combinations of cereal and toppings so the whole family can enjoy creating their own perfect bowl.

Tips to Make a Better Bowl of Cereal:

1. Cereal.

Start with the best base possible – whole grains, a short ingredient list, low in sugar. Check the serving size to make sure it’s reasonable or do the math to figure out the nutrition stats for the amount you usually eat. There are so many options that it’s easy to accommodate different taste and dietary preferences!

2. Milk.

Reach for dairy milk. Dairy milk adds the most protein per serving compared to alternatives with 8 grams per serving, which can help keep you full longer. Remember to look for the Real California Milk seal when grocery shopping to ensure it’s real food from real people. California dairy farm families help ensure all people have access to quality, sustainable and nutrient-rich foods.

3. Fruit.

Adding fruit like berries can sweeten your bowl without adding a lot of sugar. Added bonus, blueberries and raspberries are rich in antioxidants.

Tip: Choose fruits that are in season for the sweetest and often most reasonably priced options.

4. Nuts & Seeds.

Nuts and seeds add healthy fats and fiber. Crunchy toppings like nuts or if you prefer, chewy seeds, add interesting texture too.

Mixing up different flavors and textures can help keep your bowl of cereal from getting boring. Tasty toppings like crunchy nuts and seasonal fruits add nutrition benefits too. You can also swap out milk for your favorite Real California Milk yogurt instead.

how to make a healthy bowl of cereal

Choose your favorite healthy toppings to create a meal or snack that not only taste good, but also makes you feel great!

My bowl is piled high with whole grain flakes, granola, Real California milk, raspberries, walnuts and chia seeds. I switch up the fruit depending on what’s in season to make sure it’s sweet. And I’ll add different nuts or seeds depending on what I have on hand. This is the perfect mix of flavors and textures – it’ll probably be in my breakfast rotation for a while.

healthy cereal breakfast tips

Hope these tips help you create a delicious start to your day! Enjoy!!

Before the LA Marathon–Check out These Tips

I love the LA Marathon!! I think it’s one of the best marathons in the US and doesn’t get the credit it deserves! LA has this big city marathon in one of the country’s most popular travel destinations. Throughout the year people come from all over the world see the Hollywood sign, walk down the iconic Santa Monica pier and stroll through Beverly Hills – and the marathon course passes through so much of it. So… Why aren’t we talking about this? Why doesn’t it sell out?? We can talk about that another time – today I have a lot of tips and race recaps to help you get read to run LA!

LA Marathon Tips race day must have info (1)

Sadly, I can’t run the race this year because I’m in the process of freezing my eggs and on doctor’s orders not to run this week. Boo.

I really love the LA Marathon so if you’re running it – you’re in luck! I have 5 race recaps, tons of tips posts and more below. And if you’re not running it… well, you can’t register this year because it’s sold out. But Pin this post for next year!

Check out these tips and round up of posts to help you get ready to bring your A game to the starting line!

5 Last Minute Tips for the LA Marathon:

1. PLAN your Fuel & Gear for Race Day.
Check and double check the weather report and your packing list. If you trained in cold weather – think about what you wear for race day conditions.
Race day weather is in the low 60s – which I love! But if you trained in the now that might feel HOT. Plan your gear and fuel according to your body’s needs and race day conditions.

funny weather report
2. Race morning Logistics.
The LA Marathon is a point to point course = it starts at Dodger Stadium and ends 26.2 miles away near the Santa Monica Pier. So most runners need to park near the beach and take a shuttle to the starting line. It’s a very early start and the streets will be jammed. PLAN how you’ll get to the starting line, what time you need to leave your home/hotel, driving, parking and walking time.

la traffic
3. Study the Course!
I love the LA Marathon course! You’ll run by tons of iconic landmarks! And normally these streets are JAMMED so enjoy this rare opportunity!
Tip: Photo-ops include the Hollywood sign, Disney Concert Hall, Grauman’s Chinese Theater, Rodeo Drive, Santa Monica Pier and more!!
Tip: Note where the aid stations are so you can fuel appropriately. If you have a sensitive stomach bring your own solid fuel (gus, energy bars, etc) and drink water on the course.

la marathon course map highlights
4. Spectators!
Have your spectators sign up for runner tracking so they know where you are on the course. Since it’s point to point it’s hard to see someone run by more than once. Runner tracking helps know where your person is out there.

5. HAVE FUN!
You’re in LA! You’re running a race!! Enjoy every second!! Run strong. Have fun!!

Egg Freezing Update Week 2

freezing my eggs week 2 update

Freezing my eggs update… Thoughts on the next step of the process to freeze my eggs. After a week of birth control I had an appointment at the doctor’s office for more blood work and an ultra sound. Once that got the all clear I sat down with the nurse to learn what injections I’d start doing in a few days.

She went through how to set up and get the injections ready – it’s a lot more complicated than I expected!! Watch the video for what I thought it was going to be versus what it actually was…

So I enlisted the help of my friend that’s a nurse practitioner for the first night.  I’m thanking God for her big time.

I’m Freezing My Eggs–Week 1 Update

I’m one week into the process of freezing my eggs and sharing a quick update video. I’m trying to update you as I go through all the steps. So each post isn’t going to have all the information – this is a series. I’ll link to previous posts below to follow along the journey.

freezing my eggs week 1 check in

The first steps are fairly routine – a lot of appointments and blood tests. But I’ve also been feeling a little emotional and I’m not sure if that’s from the birth control or my feelings on doing this. I don’t think it should or has to be an emotional decision to freeze your eggs.

The Best of the Natural Products Expo Influencer Favorites and Healthy Food BINGO

Hello! The Natural Products Expo (aka #ExpoWest on social media) was this weekend in Anaheim, CA. It’s a huge conference with education sessions, workshops and exhibits of all the best and newest eco-friendly, healthy and natural products and efforts up and coming. There are info sessions, amazing speakers and the most massive set up of products and sample booths I’ve ever seen. It’s amazing and exciting to see all the new and improved food, home and beauty products that we’ll be able to enjoy soon (if they’re not already out).

And follow @RunEatRepeat on Instagram for a fun Expo West inspired Bingo game!

Natural Product expo 2019 best products influencer list 16 (640x480)

I first went years ago as a guest with a cereal company I was working with. I think I almost dislocated my shoulder with the epic sample bags I brought home that year!  I’m lucky to live in Southern California and have been able to attend many times. And since I’ve attended before I wanted to share my favorites from this year – and mention some new to me items. I saw a lot of health food products I’ve recently seen in stores. So a lot of these foods are either in stores now or coming soon.

This list is a mash-up of my favorites and random thoughts on the show… Enjoy!

Natural Products Expo West Highlights and Notes

Natural Product expo 2019 best products influencer list #expowest (432x576)

1. I love ketchup… lately I’m into spicy ketchup so I really liked this curry ketchup!

Related: I recently mentioned my favorite hair products in this post. Well… the shampoo & conditioner I’ve been using has ginger and a certain man in my life gave me a hug the other day and said I smell like curry. I think he confused it for ginger but I feel self-conscious about it now… I might have to switch up my shampoo & conditioner.

2. Speaking of Ginger!!! I love all things ginger – and not just because of my hair. It’s great for your stomach and great for running fuel.

4. I like that these smoothie packs come with a cup you can pour it into after you make it.

5. Just Dessert! Sometimes I just want dessert.

6. The expo highlights a lot of vegan, paleo, allergen free food items. So there really is something for everyone.

And every representative I talked to was really well informed on the products and common concerns of people trying  to avoid certain foods or add in more of specific nutrients.

This pasta had meat in the sauce and the guy handing out samples made sure to okay it with everyone as he handed it to them.

More ginger!

7. Loved all the ice cream options at the Natural Products Expo! They had organic, paleo, vegan ice cream and more. I even spotted the Talenti mint n chip gelato that I’ve been wanted to try for the longest time. They have a new layered gelato coming out but I really wanted my fave flavor. Actually you could order a scoop of whatever flavor you wanted to free. Amazing, right?

8. Did you know popcorn is one of my favorite foods?

Now you do.

And I really loved the fresh popcorn at the Watkins booth and all the toppings you could sprinkle on!

My other favorite popcorn companies were at the expo too – Boom Chica Pop, Lesser Evil, Skinny Pop, Good Health and more! I really love popcorn.

9. I thought I’ve tried every kind of nut butter and every nut butter product out there so I almost passed right by the Justin’s booth. But someone caught my attention and asked if I tried the cashew butter covered cashews and almond butter covered almonds… super good!

10. I spotted these Bob’s Red Mill granola / protein bars at Sprouts recently. They just came out in January and I was happy to test em out.

11. Cold brew coffee – love.

12. I used to be the biggest fan of Kashi cereal in college. My mom said Kashi was the secret to her weight loss – it’s probably slightly more involved than that but Kashi was one of the big things we both switched up as we tried to get healthier. A lot of the Kashi cereals have a lot of fiber and protein compared to other cereal options.

So I’m always curious and interested in their new products. The Kashi Kids Honey Cinnamon Combos was really good.

13. Granola is my weakness. And this new bear naked granola is amazing! I tried the dark chocolate hazelnut butter – it tastes like and has the consistency of a crumbled cookie.

14. One of my main focuses at the show was exploring new drinks – kombucha, enhanced water, energy drinks, probiotics in drinks, cbd oil drinks, tea based drinks, sparkling water…. I’m a big drinker.

So I was happy to see so many runner friendly drink options like coconut water based beverages and this Runa drink.

I did an instagram story of my happiness at seeing a fridge full of La Croix sparkling water. Sooooo good!!

15. Special mystery shout-out to this VEGAN tuna melt. It was so good I forgot to snap a picture of the booth where I got it! Busted because it was really good.

16. Applegate farms basically provided lunch – they were handing out full sized turkey burgers and sausage sandwiches. They have a new hamburger product coming out that’s a turkey & mushroom burger. I love both of those things so I’m excited for that!

Overall it’s hard to pick one favorite. I wish I had more time to explore the beauty products – that’s something I want to improve on in my own life.

My favorite thing about the show is how seems so inclusive. We’re all so different and our bodies and needs are so different – but hopefully there’s something for everyone!  If you have special dietary or health concerns it’s just very awesome that everyone can enjoy all the home, beauty and food treats!

For the food… I can’t pick just one thing. But I’m going to keep an eye out for a few of the food items with added benefits like drinks or foods with extra vitamins and nutrients.

Since I can’t pick winners – you can check out the NEXTY Award Winners here. That’s the list of the best in each category.

Oh and I have to give a big thank you to the Natural Products team for naming Run Eat Repeat one of the Top Influencers to watch at the show! There are amazing bloggers, YouTubers, podcasters and instagrammers from all over the US that attend with huge followings so it’s seriously an honor.
