Podcast–The one thing I have going for me with running

Podcast – Fast Friday episode! Today I’m talking about the one thing I have going for me with running. And I challenge you to name one thing that helps you be a better runner (or helps you with fitness).

I really love sharing tips and tricks on running and eating healthier. I want to answer all your questions. I hope I can be helpful and fun.

But I also want you to just really love yourself just like you are right this second. So today there’s no tip or helpful lesson or random thoughts (about how I fell and you can prevent falling or similar embarrassment). Nope. Today I am talking about the one thing I have going for me that helps me to be a better runner.

biggest strength with running (800x800)

What are you good at when it comes to running or fitness? What’s your biggest strength? Name 1 thing.

All I have going for me is… consistency.

I’m consistent. That’s it.

Or should I say, “That’s it!!!” like I just discovered gold.

This is important. And now that I know what my strength is I can work with it to become a better, stronger, faster runner.

Traits that can help you be a better runner:

Consistency

Being organized

Good planning

Making great spreadsheets

Discipline

Passion / Love for it

Taking detailed notes (training journal)

Competitiveness

There are so many things that can be used to help your running or fitness goals! What helps you?

Weight Loss Tip #6–List of all the Tips on Video

This is the final video in my series on how I lost weight. This isn’t about how you can lose weight fast or drop 10 pounds by this weekend… these are a list of habits and lessons that helped me. To be completely honest, I don’t know if my weight is going to stay at whatever it is now because this is still a work in progress for me. I’m learning what works for my body, running, activity level, energy, health and more…

weight loss tips round up (534x800)

I want to be an intuitive eater. I want to be a strong runner. And those two things are hard to combine sometimes. Runger is real! Hunger levels can be all over the place when I’m training for a race (sometimes I’m not hungry, just thirsty… sometimes I wake up starving). Maintaining a balance where I feel strong and healthy and get to eat the foods I love can be a challenge. Sometimes I work at it. Sometimes I don’t really care. Sometimes both of those on the same day.

My point is… (and always is)… Do you.

Treat your body well. Eat food you like – food that makes you feel good, strong and healthy. Exercise to keep your body healthy and strong – ideally find an exercise that you like doing. Be kind. Get enough sleep. Pray. Pay attention to the things your body is telling you. And always read Run Eat Repeat and listen to the RER podcast because it’s good for you (and by ‘you’ I mean ‘me’ thanks).

Thoughts from my run…

I am always random. But I’m extra random on a run when my thoughts wander and I think about everything from Panda Express to my most embarrassing moment to the fact that I’ve never ordered a martini (not even a green apple or whatever girly one).

Anyway. I tried to remember some of my random thoughts while running… Do you think of the most random things as well?

1. I should open a Pho restaurant that’s called Pho Sho. I bet that’s already a thing. I want to go there…

noodles

2. Nah… I’d rather have a Bed & Breakfast in Morro Bay… but when would I run if I had to make breakfast for everyone…

3. If I ever met the Fat Jew I’d introduce myself as the Chubby Catholic.

image

4. I wonder if that guy’s training for the LA marathon… am I training for the LA Marathon?? I should figure it out…

5. A boob job would be a waste of money right now.

runner boobs

6. I still need to take tennis lessons!

7. I want my eyebrows micro-bladed or whatever it’s called but the color of my hair.  I don’t want it to look like a tattoo… actually I still do want that wrist tattoo though… where else could I get it?

tattoo time 1

8. All these cyclists look the same. It’s the same person. Again!

9. Shhhh. It’s a wig…. awww. Honey Boo Boo.

shhh,gif

10. I wish I had avocado at home! Go to the store before breakfast? Hmmm.

Question: How random are your thoughts on a run?

Deep Fried Watermelon at the LA County Fair

Yes. I had deep fried watermelon today! I have so much to say about this because I love watermelon and I love fried food and I love food on a stick… but do I love fried watermelon on a stick?? I needed to find out. But first… let’s run through the other pictures from the LA County Fair.

Deep fried watermelon 15 (800x800)

I go to the fair for the food. Apparently there are rides and exhibits with awesome crafts and art and recipes that have won blue ribbons. But again – fair food is fun fried food. And I’m all about it!

Deep fried watermelon 1 (441x588) Deep fried watermelon 3 (784x588)

Luckily I went to the LA County Fair (that’s actually in Pomona so I used to call it the Pomona Fair as a kid) with my family. And my lil brother is fun to eat with because he rolls with whatever I order and we can share a ton of different things. Boom!

I finally got the cheese on a stick I’ve been randomly craving!

Deep fried watermelon 2 (784x588)

We shared…

a turkey leg, cheese on a stick (pepper jack), nachos, Dole whip, burrito bowl, deep fried watermelon, funnel cake

Deep fried watermelon 13 (784x588) Deep fried watermelon 16 (800x800)

It was the last day of the fair so it was extra busy! Every food booth and all the rides had long lines.

Deep fried watermelon 8 (784x588) Deep fried watermelon 11 (784x588) Deep fried watermelon 4 (478x637) Deep fried watermelon 10 (441x588)

I didn’t take the Funnel Cake Challenge… but I kinda wish I would have!

Deep fried watermelon 7 (441x588)

This booth brings back memories of epic fried foods I’ve tried in the past…

Deep fried watermelon 17 (784x588) Deep fried watermelon 12 (784x588) Deep fried watermelon 14 (784x588)

And I spotted a super hero at the fair! Love.

Deep fried watermelon 9 (441x588)

Okay… Let’s talk about deep fried watermelon!

You can see it was a big wedge of watermelon. It’s lightly battered and fried. Then, it’s topped with syrup and a light dusting of powdered sugar. And it’s served on a stick.

When the girl at the booth handed it to me she advised that I should go grab some napkins because it can be a little juicy and messy.

Deep fried watermelon 6 (441x588)

As I was taking a picture and eating it a lot of people passing by commented on it…

“Is that watermelon?”  … “Fried watermelon!”  … “Is it good?”

Deep fried watermelon 15 (800x800)

1000% watermelon is my favorite food. (Unless you’re new to Run Eat Repeat – you probably are super well aware!)
I’m usually a watermelon purist and don’t like it in recipes or cooked. So I figured I wouldn’t really love fried watermelon
But I felt morally obligated to try it so I could report back to you. (Tough job but somebody’s gotta do it.)

Presentation was awesome. ✔ ‎ ‎The batter was thin, not overpowering. ✔ ‎ ‎Watermelon was sweet but it was weird that it was warm. ✔ ‎
It was a fun thing to try, but I wouldn’t get it again. ✔

Question: Anyone else try deep fried watermelon?

Did you go to your local Fair this year?

Podcast : How to Have Proper Running Form–Arm Swing

Fast Running Podcast

It’s Fast Friday! Today we’re talking about running form – specifically arm swing.

I noticed in my last race pics from the Lexus Lace Up 10k  that my arms are swinging in front of my body. What?!!

proper running form arm swing

I try to have good form because it helps with running economy.

And if we’re being honest – I extra try to keep good form during a race when I see a race photographer!!

So that means I either got super excited when I saw the photo and half waved / half ran… or I didn’t have good form.

Running form is a big topic and every body is different so today I’m just addressing arm swing.

>>> Your arms should be at a 90 degree angle (or about there) and swing forward and back – not across your body.

>>>  Nips / hips and chips – hand goes no higher than your nipple –>  stops at your hip.

>>> (Chips…) Your hand shouldn’t be in a super tight fist – keep it light like you’re holding a chip between your thumb and pointer finger.

>>> If you notice your neck, back or wrists hurt you might want to check how you are swinging your arms – how you are holding your hands – how your shoulders and neck are positioned and if there’s any tension.

More than anything your arm swing should be helping you run – not hurting or slowing you down.

Have a good run!

Check out my Nips, Hips and Chips video for tips on on how to swing your arms while running here.

Thank you for listening to the RER Podcast! Please leave a rating on the show in your podcast app and subscribe.

On a scale of 1 to 10… How was your arm swing form on your last run?

1 = Sloppy McSlopperson (after 3 margaritas and your foot is asleep)

5 = okay

10 = Top #1 Navy Seal on their best day!

Note – As with everything you see on Run Eat Repeat’s site and social channels… Do what is best for your body. Always consult your doctor before doing any exercise or diet routine. Take care of your body.

2 Easy 5 Ingredient Recipes

Feeling lazy? Vegas is…

easy dinner trader joes (800x600)

Luckily for you (not Vegas because someone gives him food everyday so he doesn’t cook) I have two super easy ‘recipes’ you can throw together with just 5 ingredients. Okay it’s not a recipe but maybe an idea for ya?

Both recipes use tortillas, mushrooms and cheese. So you can use it up before they go bad (or you eat them while cooking another meal).

Ezekiel Pizza – 5 ingredients

5 ingredient dinner trader joes 1 (784x588)

Ezekiel Sprouted Tortilla / mushrooms / sauce / cheese / tomatoes

Tortilla > sauce > cheese > mushrooms > tomatoes… broil. Watch closely. Heat until cheese is melted. Let cool. Enjoy!

5 ingredient dinner trader joes 4 (784x588)

Easy Quesadilla – 5 ingredients

Ezekiel Sprouted Tortillas / mushrooms /  salsa / cheese / beans

5 ingredient dinner trader joes (784x588)

Tortilla cooked with beans, mushrooms and cheese. I served it with TJ’s salsa. All I needed was guacamole to make it perfect.

Tip: I put something like a small tupperware lid and can on top of the quesadilla so it presses down and the tortilla cooks up crisp.

5 ingredient dinner trader joes 7 (784x588)

And watermelon! To be clear – this isn’t dessert, But it is my favorite food!

easy dinner trader joes 1 (441x588)

Question: Do you have all the ingredients to make one of these right now?

How to make chickpeas in the crockpot

This was part of my meal prep and a few people asked for the recipe. Well, I don’t have a recipe but here’s how I do it…

Get some chickpeas. Bonus points if you get them from the 99 cent store.

Soak them overnight in cool water, covering at least 2 inches.

Rinse them in the morning.

make chickpeas in the crockpot 2 (784x588)

Place in crockpot (aka slow cooker) cover with water and add 8 peeled garlic cloves and salt. (Or however much garlic you want.) Cook on high for 2-4 hours or until they are done to your preference.

make chickpeas in the crockpot 3 (784x588)

Drain and add salt or any other seasoning you want. I added salt.

The garlic gets all mushy and I just smash it over the chickpeas. And now I smell like garlic.

make chickpeas in the crockpot (784x588)

And since it takes all day to cook them (hello it’s called a slow cooker) I got donuts to eat while I waited.

Okay, that’s not why I got the donuts – I just wanted them.

make chickpeas in the crockpot 1 (784x588)

This. It’s a sign.

make chickpeas in the crockpot 4 (441x588)

Okay… I need your help with the #BrooksChallenge

I got a package in the mail today from Brooks with a challenge. I gotta put on the magic shoes (not their official name but I dig it) and pick one of the following to do and capture with a photo or video… Then, someone from Brooks will do the same.

brooks challenge (441x588) brooks challenge 1 (441x588)

Run at sunrise and sunset on the same day.

Run backwards for a mile. (I’m definitely going to fall, but I still want to do this one.)

Run while pushing someone who is not able to run.

Run your longest run ever (time or distance).  (Ah! That would be  over 31 miles because I did the Born to Run Ultra Marathon!!)

Run a route that creates infinity sign on a map. (I don’t do any of those apps that trace your route. Any recs?)

Run out to get a bottle of wine. The sancerre region in France is beautiful this time of year.

Run to see someone to apologize. (I probably have a lot of people I should apologize to, but they all live so far!)

Run to the highest point in your city or country or continent.

Run to work. And just keep going. Do not worry, we’ll send an apology note. (My boss is going to be pissed!) (Also, RunEatRepeat is my job so I’m kinda my boss.)

Run across a border. (Insert joke about how my family ran across the other way and this is kinda back-tracking.)

Run to pick someone up for a date. (Do I have to actually pick them up when I get there? Can I make a date with the lightest person willing to go out with me?)

Run with as many dogs on leashes as possible. (I want to run with all the dogs in the world!)

Run until you pass 100 (stop signs, blue cars, cows, dogs…)

Run to all of your meetings for the day or week. (Most of my meetings are on the phone so maybe I could leave my phone at various places?)

Run happy. (done and done!)

brooks challenge 2 (441x588) brooks challenge 4 (441x588) brooks challenge 3 (441x588)

Okay. Which one should I do??

I want to do all of them!

Question: Which one should I do (first)?
